(1) Source Code. The source code tells you how you get an item needed for maintenance, repair, or
overhaul of an end item/equipment. Source codes are always the first two positions of the SMR code.
Explanations of source codes follow:
Item procured and stocked for anticipated or known usage.
Item procured and stocked for insurance purposes because essentiality dictates
that a minimum quantity be available in the supply system.
Item procured and stocked and which otherwise would be coded PA except that it
is deteriorative in nature.
Support item, excluding support equipment, procured for initial issue or outfitting
and stocked only for subsequent or additional initial issues or outfittings. Not
subject to automatic replenishment.
Support equipment procured and stocked for initial issue or outfitting to specified
maintenance repair activities.
Support equipment which will not be stocked but which will be centrally procured
Item procured and stocked to provide for sustained support for the life of the
equipment. It is applied to an item peculiar to the equipment which because of
probable discontinuance or shutdown of production facilities would prove
uneconomical to reproduce at a later time.

items with these codes are not to be requested/requisitioned
individually. They must be made from bulk material which is
identified by Part Number and Commercial and Government Entity
(CAGE) in the Description column and listed in the Bulk Material
group in the repair parts list in this manual. If the item is authorized
to you by the third position code of the SMR code, but the source
code indicates it is made at a higher category, order the item from the
higher category of maintenance.
Items with these codes are not to be requested/requisitioned
individually. The parts that make up the assembled item must be
requisitioned or fabricated and assembled at the category of mainte-
nance indicated by the source code. If the third position code of the
SMR code authorizes you to replace the item, but the source code
indicates the item is assembled at a higher category, order the item
from the higher category of maintenance.
